Introduction

Transformational change is not an ambiguous concept any more. Organizations large and small face a global marketplace where the rules governing competitive advantage have changed. Strong group leadership and communication skills are the tools needed to survive system-wide change. These skills mobilize and unite diverse groups of people who may never have worked together before, or who need to work together in a different manner.

Nowhere is this change happening so fast and with so much public attention as in health care. All segments of the health care industry – whether major hospitals and medical centers, HMOs/PPOs, clinics, physicians in group practice, or new physician-hospital organizations – have become the proving ground for leadership techniques that can be adapted and applied to other industries.
